DZ Septic Truck Driver


The DZ Septic Truck Driver’s main duty includes the operation of our septic waste haulage truck for our HCA owned and operated facilities from April to December each year.  The position also assists with a wide range of restoration and construction projects within all HCA owned Conservation Areas, including infrastructure upgrades to: buildings, fences, roads, parking lots, trails, pedestrian bridges, and utility services when not operating the septic truck. This position plays an important role within the Capital Projects and Strategic Services division and reports directly to the Construction Foreman, while providing support for the Construction Projects Manager.

Duties and Responsibilities

Operate septic haulage truck:

  • Load and unload and transport septic waste to and from the City of Hamilton Waste Facility site.
  • Conduct daily circle checks on truck and keep accurate documentation for the purpose to update HCA supervisors as to when equipment is due for service or repair.
  • Keep accurate logs of where septic waste is hauled from and to.

Construction labour duties:

  • Work with other crew members performing general and skilled labourer duties, as required such as repairing and building bridges and boardwalks, laying sod, installing underground utility services and seasonal road work.
  • Assist other trades (carpentry/electrical) when necessary to pull new wires through conduit, roof replacements, drywall and flooring tasks.

Operate DZ trucks and smaller with trailers (less than class AZ):

  • Load/Unload various pieces of equipment and materials on trailer and dump box.
  • Ensure all pieces are secured properly and meet Ministry of Transportation (MTO) standards.
  • Deliver materials to job sites.
  • Comply with all safety rules and regulations and be aware of potential hazards on job sites (overhead lines, slopes/grades, tight spaces, etc.).
  • Conduct daily vehicle circle checks on trucks and keep accurate documentation as per MTO standards in accordance to the Highway Traffic Act.

Administration and other duties:

  • Attend monthly internal department safety meetings.
  • Assist at parks when necessary (e.g. mowing).
  • Other related duties as may be assigned.

Qualifications

  • A high school diploma
  • DZ driver’s license with a clean abstract and knowledge of safe working practices
  • Septic or vacuum style truck driver experience an asset; a minimum of five years of experience operating a vacuum style truck and working with septic systems would be preferred
  • Must be able to operate D Class trucks using standard transmissions
  • Operation of various types of power tools and equipment relating specifically to the construction trade and driving various types of trucks, equipment and rental equipment
  • Experience in minor plumbing and fitting of electrical conduits for utility service
  • Knowledge of truck capabilities (e.g. axle weights etc.)
  • Knowledge of Highway Traffic Act and cargo securement guidelines as set out by MTO
  • Experience in general construction techniques and handling of Hazardous waste water
  • Successful candidate must have, or be willing to get, Hep A, Hep B and Tetanus vaccinations
  • Must be able to lift 80 lbs.
  • Certifications in Confined Space training, First Aid and Book 7 Traffic Control would be considered an asset
  • Experience in both the public and private sector would be considered an asset

Working Conditions

Position is located at the Millgrove Works Yard of the Hamilton Conservation Authority, located at 594 5th Concession West, Millgrove, Ont. Hours of work generally fall between 7am – 4:30 pm, with a half-hour unpaid lunch based on a 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday. Work outside of these hours may be required on occasion. Depending on approved projects, funding and scope of work in any given year this position may be considered for annual renewal as to support the team effort.

Salary and Benefits

This contract position offers an hourly rate starting at $24.75, commensurate with experience and education. To ensure that compensation aligns with economic realities, yearly cost-of-living adjustments may be considered.
