The Hamilton Conservation Foundation (HCF) is excited to announce a generous $150,000 grant from TD Bank Group (TD) to support the Saltfleet Conservation Area Wetland Restoration Project. This funding will help advance several aspects of the project, including the design and construction of a third wetland, slated to begin in 2027 and be completed in 2028, the creation of new recreational trails, and the installation of signage to enhance wayfinding and share the area’s unique natural features.

HCF, a registered charity, supports the Hamilton Conservation Authority (HCA) by raising funds to protect natural and cultural heritage, educate youth about conservation, and acquire vital lands within the watershed.

Designed to combat flooding, erosion, and the effects of climate change, the Saltfleet Conservation Area Wetland Restoration Project uses a nature-based approach to enhance community well-being in Hamilton. Once complete, it will include four new wetlands and a conservation area, creating a local gem that delivers meaningful environmental, health, and community benefits.

The Saltfleet Conservation Area Wetland Restoration Project aims to reduce the impacts of climate change by helping to manage flooding and erosion in the Stoney Creek area of Hamilton. Neighbourhoods in the Lower Stoney and Battle Creek areas have experienced ongoing flooding and erosion challenges for decades, mainly due to historical development that altered natural waterways and did not account for natural hazards.

In partnership with the City of Hamilton, HCA conducted two environmental assessments to explore solutions. The resulting plan includes the creation of four strategically placed wetlands to reduce flood risk, stabilize creek banks, and enhance natural heritage features. This nature-based approach offers a cost-effective, environmentally sustainable solution that benefits the community and the local ecosystem.

By 2023, HCA had secured all 411 acres of land needed for the project, which is expected to be completed by 2030. Once finished, the wetlands will improve wildlife habitats, create new spaces for outdoor recreation, and enhance the quality of life for Hamilton residents.
