Guided Bird Hikes

Join our resident bird expert, James Lees, and immerse yourself in the wonderful world of birds and the natural history of the Dundas Valley Conservation Area. James has worked with birds for 26 years and has guided over 45 professional birding tours around the world. He is based in the Dundas Valley Conservation Area here in Hamilton.

Whether you are a beginner or have been birding for a while, everyone will find plenty of learning opportunities at these tranquil events.

This year, HCA has several bird hikes throughout the year, each offering different opportunities to learn more about birds.

Hikes and Dates

Breeding Bird Special

Sunday, June 15 at 7 AM
Learn what birds choose to nest in the Dundas Valley. This hike will pay special attention to bird song and nesting behaviours. As always, this hike will be looking for all-natural history, not just birds.

Summer Birding

Sunday, July 6 at 7 AM
Many birds will either be actively feeding young in nests or the successfully fledged young will now be out and about. As always, this hike will be looking for all-natural history, and not just birds.

Early Migration

Sunday, August 24 at 7 AM
August can be a very good month to observe the first southbound bird migration. Many birds that either bred early or failed to breed will be passing through heading south. Learn how to identify tricky fall flycatchers and some early warblers passing through.

Fall Classic Migration

Sunday, September 28 at 8 AM
September is arguably the best birding month of the year. The species diversity and volume of birds passing through will be at their highest point of the entire year. Learn how to identify tricky fall warblers or the calls of many birds passing over. If the winds are in a good direction, anything is possible in September.

Details

  • A maximum of 14 places are available per hike.
  • The pace of the hike is moderate, and the terrain is variable.
  • Water bottle recommended and binoculars are essential.
  • Unfortunately, dogs are not welcome to this event.

HCA Members: $15 plus HST
Non-members: $20 plus HST
