Fifty Point Conservation Area

Fifty Point Conservation Area is approximately 98 hectares in size and is located in Hamilton (formerly Winona). The property located on the south shore of Lake Ontario straddles the town line between Hamilton and Grimsby with almost half of the conservation area containing the campground and beach being in Grimsby.

The area is comprised of a 340-slip full-service marina, 73 site full-service campground, picnic and day use/beach areas and a fishing pond. The area is also home to the Limani Restaurant, The Fifty Point Yacht Club and the Ingledale House historic residence. Staff are involved in all aspects of the maintenance and operation of the entire area.

Reporting to the Manager, the Conservation Area Supervisor works along with the Assistant Managers at Fifty Point Conservation Area. This position takes a lead role in supervising and carrying out the day-to-day operations of the Conservation Area and Marina. The Conservation Area Supervisor will also carry out administrative tasks, report writing and documentation, training, providing excellent customer service and ensuring efficient delivery of all Conservation Area services and activities.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for ensuring excellent customer service to all visitors, stakeholders, service providers and other groups of the Conservation Area and Marina, and to respond and/or direct customer complaints, issues and problems.
  • Provide supervision, safety and decision-making during boat lift operation working closely with the Manager and Assistant Managers, ensuring the competence and safety of Employees and members of the public.
  • In collaboration with other members of the Fifty Point management team participate in the hiring and supervision of external contractors on HCA projects.
  • Participate in hiring, training and supervision of casual staff including, but not limited to, scheduling and employee performance appraisals.
  • Conduct regular inspections of equipment and the facilities as well as demonstrate mechanical aptitude and knowledge in operating equipment such as hand tools, chainsaws, trucks, mowers, loaders and tractors.
  • Work in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety Act, HCA policies and Safe Working Procedures as well as assist in training the causal staff in accordance with those procedures.
  • Coordinate and carry out HCA safety policies, lead regular safety meetings for staff, be responsible for performing regular safety audits and ensure proper completion of safety reports, inspections, investigations, and implement recommendations in a timely manner as required and in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Ministry of Labour (MOL), Ministry of Transportation (MTO), and the Technical Standards and Safety Authority (TSSA).
  • Assist in the booking and reserving of pavilions, transient slips and campsites using CAMIS reservation system, as well as regular handling of cash and bank deposits.
  • Coordinate and carry out maintenance duties and daily tasks pertaining to the Campground, Marina, and Conservation Area, ensuring repairs are completed and facility operates efficiently.
  • Other duties as required to meet the organizational needs of the HCA.
Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in the form of a college diploma and/or university degree in a related field. Ideally in parks and recreation, resource management, tourism, environmental science or business administration.
  • A minimum of one to three years of supervisory experience, customer service, ground maintenance and equipment operation.
  • Three years of progressively responsible experience in outdoor recreation, in fields such as Conservation Areas, Marina, Campground, Municipal Parks, Provincial Parks or broader related public sectors.
  • Experience in general facility maintenance, grounds maintenance, ability to safely handle and operate power tools, small and large equipment such as mowers, chainsaws, tractors, grass trimmers and snowplows.
  • Proven ability to communicate with visitors, staff, volunteers, business partners, and other user groups in a positive and professional manner.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, as well as experience with POS applications and reservations systems such as CAMIS.
  • Must enjoy working outdoors in all types of weather, and to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays, and provide on-call support when required.
  • Engage in sustained periods of walking and be able to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Good knowledge of safe working practices and a commitment to promoting a safe work culture.
  • Valid G driver’s license and Pleasure Craft Operators card.
  • Awareness of various acts and regulations such as the Conservation Authorities Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Employment Standards Act and other related legislation is an asset.
  • Understanding of conservation areas operations and development and knowledge of Clean Marine best practices is an asset.
  • Possession of certifications in first aid/CPR, Security, JHSC, Provincial Offences Act, Small Drinking Water Systems, Chainsaw Certification, TSSA Site Operator, and Aquatic Pesticide License is an asset.
Working Conditions

The work location is Fifty Point Conservation Area, 1479 Baseline Road, Winona, ON. This position may be assigned to work at any of HCA’s conservation or managed areas through the year depending on business needs to assist on either a short- or longer-term basis or at special events.

Work hours are 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, Monday through Sunday. Being on-call, as well as having regular evening shifts, and scheduled work on weekends and holidays will be a recurring and expected aspect of the position.

Salary

This is a full-time position. The position offers a salary range of $70,743 to $82,010 commensurate with experience and education. Progression will be based on merit and is reviewed annually. Additionally, yearly cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) may be considered.

Benefits

This position is eligible for benefits as outlined in HCA’s Employee Handbook as it pertains to a full-time position. Most benefits become effective after the 3-month probation period (health, dental, disability insurances and life insurance); however, the defined contribution pension plan requires one year of service.
