Water Resources Technician

Summer Position

This is a summer position in Hamilton Conservation Authority’s (HCA) Watershed Management Services Department. Responsibilities include surface water quality sampling and equipment maintenance, assistance with the maintenance of rain and stream gauge equipment, groundwater monitoring, and associated data processing and management. This position reports to the Manager of Water Resources Engineering

Responsibilities
  • Surface Water Quality Sampling and Equipment Maintenance
    • Assistance in surface water sampling, and equipment maintenance, for the HCA and Provincial Surface Water Quality Monitoring programs
    • Assistance in data collection, data processing and management
    • Assistance in surface water quality analysis (as required)
  • Maintenance of Stream and Rain Gauge Equipment
    • Assistance in the maintenance of HCA precipitation and flow stations, as well as Christie and Valens Dam water levels gauges
    • Assistance in data collection, data processing and management
    • Assistance in flow, precipitation and level analysis (as required)
  • Groundwater Monitoring
    • Assistance in maintenance of HCA and Provincial Groundwater Monitoring Network
    • Assistance in data collection, data processing and management
  • Data Management
    • Assistance in Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) of existing data related to flow, level, precipitation, surface water quality, and groundwater (preferably using HCA’s WISKI database system).
    • Data entry
  • Other duties as required
Qualifications
  • Enrolled in or graduated from University or College with focus in water resources or engineering
  • Experience in water resources and engineering, particularly water quality sampling, rain and flow monitoring, and corresponding data processing and analysis
  • Good communication skills
  • Knowledge of environmental and natural resources relative to local, watershed and provincial levels
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Some flexibility as to pattern of work hours
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license

Please note that this summer position is in part to be funded by the Canada Summer Jobs program (CSJ). Working Conditions

The Water Resources Technician will be based at the Hamilton Conservation Authority’s main office, 838 Mineral Springs Rd., Ancaster, Ontario. However, considerable time will be spent in the field on HCA-owned lands and other properties. Working hours will total 37.5 per week, Monday through Friday inclusive, with the possible additional requirement of evening meetings and occasional work on weekends.

Salary

This is a 16-week casual position with an anticipated starting date of May 4, 2026 and an anticipated completion date of Friday August 21, 2026. The rate of pay for this position is $18.53 per hour.
