RBC Foundation Pledges $200,000 Donation to Hamilton Conservation Foundation to support Saltfleet Wetlands Restoration

Hamilton Conservation Authority (HCA), through its fundraising partner the Hamilton Conservation Foundation (HCF), has received a pledged donation of $200,000 over two years from the RBC Foundation to support the Saltfleet Conservation Area Wetland Restoration Project. This pledged donation is part of RBC’s ambition to help support the transition to a net-zero economy through nature-based climate solutions that restore ecosystems, support Indigenous-led conservation, and build more resilient communities.

The Saltfleet project is transforming land above the Niagara Escarpment into wetlands that will act as natural infrastructure, reducing flooding and stormwater, filtering pollutants, and storing carbon, while creating habitat for wildlife and expanding outdoor recreation opportunities. Once complete, the four wetlands will help protect downstream neighbourhoods from flooding and erosion, provide habitat for wildlife, and offer new trails and outdoor learning spaces for Hamilton residents on 411 acres of new conservation land.

“This project is about strengthening Hamilton’s natural systems,” said Scott Peck, HCA’s Deputy CAO and Director of Watershed Management Services. “By restoring wetlands, we are reducing flood risks, improving water quality, and creating healthier habitats that benefit both people and wildlife. RBC Foundation’s donation provides important support as we carry this project forward.”

The donation will directly support archaeological assessments, First Nations consultations and construction costs.

“With less than 30% of our original wetlands remaining in Southern Ontario, now is more important than ever to conserve them,” said Steve Nixon, Regional Vice President, Greater Hamilton, RBC. “The Saltfleet Wetland Restoration Project will help provide ecological benefits and recreational opportunities, and at the same time help address flooding and erosion challenges faced by local residents.”

Since opening to the public in 2022, the Saltfleet Conservation Area has been evolving into a destination for ecological restoration, nature-based resilience and conservation learning. The Saltfleet Wetland Restoration Project is a multi-year, multi-partner initiative with an overall investment of over $18 million.
