Beach at Christie Lake closed due to confirmed presence of blue-green algae

The beach and swimming area at Christie Lake Conservation Area is now closed to swimmers and animals
due to the confirmed presence of blue-green algae.

Hamilton Public Health Services has confirmed the presence of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) following
water testing at Christie Lake. Samples were collected from several shoreline locations and analyzed. The
confirmed results triggered this closure.

This naturally occurring organism can produce toxins known as microcystins, which pose a health risk to
humans and animals.

Health Advisory
Exposure to blue-green algae can occur through skin contact or accidental ingestion of contaminated
water. Symptoms may include skin irritation, rash, sore throat, red eyes, swollen lips, fever, nausea,
vomiting, and/or diarrhea. The most serious effects are caused by consuming the contaminated water.

Quick Facts

  • Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) typically forms in shallow, warm, slow-moving, or still waters.
  • Algae thrive in water with elevated temperatures and high nutrient levels.
  • As algae and aquatic vegetation die and decay, they can emit strong, unpleasant odours, especially
    near the shoreline.
