Boat Rinse: Clean, Drain, Dry!

As of 2022, boaters are now required by law to remove any aquatic plants, animals, or debris from their boats before transporting them over land under the Invasive Species Act. Learn how to protect our lakes and rivers with simple Clean, Drain, Dry steps!

What are invasive species, and why are they bad?

Invasive species are plants, animals, and pathogens that are non-native to an area. Invasive species can have detrimental impacts on local ecosystems, recreation, human health, and the economy. It’s important to stop the spread of invasives when we can. Learn more about invasive species.

Why is it important to rinse my boat?

Invasive species can hitch a ride on your boat and then be spread to other lakes, creeks, and watersheds. Follow these simple steps:

  • Clean: Rinse and clean your boat after pulling out of the water.
  • Drain: Drain your boat.
  • Dry: Let your boat dry in the sun. The solarization process will help kill any remaining invasives on your boat.

HCA Insider: Boat Rinse Station

In this video, our Invasive Species Technicians Ben and Bryson demonstrate how to use the boat rinse station at Fifty Point Conservation Area properly.

The best way to manage invasive species is to stop them from arriving in the first place. Help stop the spread and keep our waterways healthy for future generations.
