Statistical Technician

This is a summer position in Hamilton Conservation Authorities (HCA) Watershed Management Services Division. Responsibilities include completing a power analysis on HCA’s Aquatic, Terrestrial and Water Resource monitoring programs. This will include working in R statistical software, GIS and Manifold to complete this work. A field work component will be included to familiarize the successful candidate with the data. This position will also assist with reporting, entering field data and data management. This position reports to the Supervisor of Stewardship and Ecological Services.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform data entry of information, and make corrections, as required.
  • Conduct data validation and assessment to determine readiness and ensure the data meets the pre-determined criteria.
  • Clean data sets for use in power analysis
  • Run power analysis in R statistical software
  • Power analysis would be completed for the terrestrial and aquatic resource monitoring program databases to ensure enough statical power to track trends over time
  • Create trend analysis for this data in relation to climate change among other variables.
  • Assist with reporting the results of the power analysis
  • Plan, organize, coordinate, and manage daily assigned work
  • Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
  • Enrolled or graduated from University or College program with focus in statistics, mathematics or ecology
  • An interest in ecology or environmental science would be an asset
  • Experience with R and R Studio software programming
  • Experience with databases and data QA/QC
  • Experience in conducting power analysis
  • Familiarity with Manifold (or database software) and GIS
  • Able to work as a team member
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and GIS software
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license and current first aid/CPR certification
  • Transportation to HCA office
Working Conditions

The Statistical Technician (Summer Position) will be based at the Hamilton Conservation Authority’s main office in Ancaster, Ontario. Working hours will total 37.5 per week, Monday through Friday inclusive, with the additional occasional requirement of evening meetings and work on weekends.

Work Term and Rate of Pay

This is a 16-week casual position with an anticipated starting date of Monday, May 4, 2026 and anticipated completion date of Friday, August 21, 2026. The rate of pay is $22.65 per hour.
