Funding to Decommission Abandoned Water Wells

Are you a property owner in the City of Hamilton that has an unused or abandoned well on your property? Property owners in the City of Hamilton may be eligible to receive financial assistance to decommission abandoned water wells on their property, up to a maximum of $1,000 per well, with a limit of two wells per property.

Unused or abandoned wells that are not properly filled, sealed and capped provide a direct route for contaminants to enter groundwater aquifers, posing risks to our drinking water supply. Abandoned wells can also be a safety hazard for people and animals. Properly decommissioning abandoned water wells helps to protect drinking water and to address potential safety hazards on private property.
