Assistant Manager
at Fifty Point Conservation Area
Fifty Point Conservation Area is approximately 98 hectares in size and is located in Hamilton (formerly Winona). The property located on the south shore of Lake Ontario straddles the town line between Hamilton and Grimsby with almost half of the conservation area containing the campground and beach being in Grimsby.
The area is comprised of a 340-slip full-service marina, 73 site full-service campground, picnic and day use/beach areas and a fishing pond. The area is also home to the Limani Restaurant, Fifty Point Yacht Club and the Ingledale House historic residence. Staff are involved in all aspects of the maintenance and operation of the entire area.
Reporting to the Manager, the Assistant Manager provides support in the pursuit and provision of high quality, diverse conservation areas that promote outdoor recreation, health and well-being and strengthen public awareness.
The Assistant works in tandem with the Manager, managing the day-to-day operation and administration of the conservation area and helps oversee operational and resource staffing plans to ensure efficiency, public and staff safety, optimal customer service, security of assets and compliance with legislation and policy. The position takes a hands-on approach in this role to support the programs, services and maintenance in the conservation areas and works collaboratively with the Manager to provide leadership to staff throughout the park. In the absence of the Manager, the Assistant Manager assumes roles and responsibilities during periods of their absence.
Responsibilities
- Coordinate, oversee and carry out all Conservation Area and Marina Operations.
- Respond to emergencies during and after hours, issues, problems or complaints from the public and provide customer service to area users.
- Ensure visitors abide by HCA Rules, Regulations and Policies including handling customer concerns which may include addressing conflicts and disputes by using effective de-escalation techniques
- Operate equipment including fuel dock, boats, loaders, trucks, carts, as well as smaller equipment such as hands tools, trimmers, and mowers, while maintaining compliance with HCA’s safety policies and procedures and Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA).
- Assist in the selection, review and supervision of contractors on HCA projects, ensuring Health & Safety policies and work performance meet or exceed HCA standards.
- Coordinate and facilitate hiring, safety training and supervision of full time and casual staff, including but not limited to, scheduling, and performance management.
- Oversee and coordinate user agreements, filming agreements, documentation and inspections related to HCA Policies, OHSA, TSSA, MTO, JHSC, including writing and maintaining visitor and staff incident reporting.
- Assist in the financial accounting, banking, budget and development of the fee schedule and other operating procedures.
- Develop good working relationships with external enforcement agencies such as Hamilton Police Service, Animal Control, Hamilton Municipal By-law, Ontario provincial police, Ministry of Natural Resources etc.
- Attend relevant Conservation Advisory Board and Board of Director meetings to attain corporate perspective.
- Other duties as required to meet the organizational needs of the HCA.
- Work in accordance with Occupational Health and Safety Act, HCA policies and Safe Working Procedures as well as assist in training the causal staff in accordance with those procedures.

Qualifications
- Post-secondary education in the form of a college diploma and/or university degree in a related field. Ideally in parks and recreation, resource management, tourism, environmental science or business administration.
- A minimum of three to five years of progressively responsible experience in outdoor recreation, in fields such as Conservation Areas, Municipal Parks, Provincial Parks or broader related public sectors.
- Three years of supervisory experience in employee management.
- Understanding of conservation areas operations and development and knowledge of Clean Marine best practices.
- Awareness of various acts and regulations such as the Conservation Authorities Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, the Employment Standards Act and other related legislation.
- Demonstrated mechanical aptitude and sufficient experience to operate various pieces of equipment are required. Must be willing to complete the Marina Operations training program and obtain certification for Industrial Crane Operator, Forklift Operator, Mobile Hoist, and Hydraulic Trailer. Possession of any of these certifications is an asset.
- Must enjoy working outdoors in all types of weather, and to work shifts, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays, and provide on-call support when required.
- Engage in sustained periods of walking and be able to lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
- Possession of certifications in first aid/CPR, Security, JHSC, Provincial Offences Act, Small Drinking Water Systems, Chainsaw Certification, TSSA Site Operator, and Aquatic Pesticide License is a definite asset.
- Experience in revenue practices, expenditure control, purchasing, cash handling, and building annual budget.
- Excellent interpersonal skills to communicate with visitors, and lead full time, contract and causal staff members.
- Ability to make presentations and reports for Senior Leadership Team, advisory committees and annual general staff meetings.
- Good knowledge of safe working practices and a commitment to promoting a safe work culture.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook, as well as experience with POS applications and reservations systems such as CAMIS.
- Valid G driver’s license and Pleasure Craft Operators card.
Working Conditions
The work location is Fifty Point Conservation Area, 1479 Baseline Road, Winona, ON. This position may be assigned to work at any of HCA’s conservation or managed areas through the year depending on business needs to assist on either a short- or longer-term basis or at special events.
Work hours are 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, Monday through Sunday. Being on-call, as well as having regular evening shifts, and scheduled work on weekends and holidays will be a recurring and expected aspect of the position.
Salary
This is a full-time position. The position offers a salary range of $75,631 to $87,677 commensurate with experience and education. Progression will be based on merit and is reviewed annually. Additionally, yearly cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) may be considered.

This position is eligible for benefits as outlined in HCA’s Employee Handbook as it pertains to a full-time position. Most benefits become effective after the 3-month probation period (health, dental, disability insurances and life insurance); however, the defined contribution pension plan requires one year of service.
