Health and Safety Coordinator
Reporting to the Director, Human Resources and Wellness Services, the Health and Safety Coordinator is responsible for leading the planning, implementation, and continuous improvement of the Hamilton Conservation Authority’s corporate health and safety program in compliance with applicable legislation, regulations, and standards.
This role promotes a strong safety culture across the organization by fostering safe work practices through communication, training, development of safe work procedures, and the provision of health and safety resources. The Health and Safety Coordinator administers and monitors the health and safety program with the objective of minimizing workplace incidents and injuries.
The position provides expert guidance to supervisors and staff on legislative requirements and safe work practices, supports the Joint Health and Safety Committee, and collaborates closely with the Human Resources team on wellness initiatives and WSIB claims management support.
Responsibilities
Health and Safety Program Leadership
- Develop, implement, and maintain the corporate occupational health and safety program.
- Create, update, and oversee safe work procedures and safety programs.
- Provide practical guidance on the Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations to ensure compliance.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory changes and implement required updates.
- Conduct safety audits, hazard assessments, and risk analyses; recommend and monitor corrective actions.
- Maintain the Hazard Management Program and Hazard Risk Registry.
- Liaise with internal teams, regulatory bodies, and external partners to support best practices.
Training and Awareness
- Coordinate and document health and safety training and orientation records.
- Assess training needs and deliver or coordinate safety training programs.
- Evaluate training effectiveness and identify opportunities for improvement.
Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC)
- Actively participate as a member of the JHSC, providing technical advice and resources.
- Support workplace inspections, committee meetings, and compliance activities.
Incident and Injury Management & WSIB Support
- Coordinate accident and near-miss investigations and track corrective actions.
- Support WSIB claims management, administer the return-to-work program and Health and Safety Excellence Program participation.
- Work with regulatory and government officials in response to orders or critical injuries and ensure accurate reporting and documentation.
- Track and report health and safety data, injury statistics and trends.
Additional Responsibilities
- Support corporate wellness initiatives in collaboration with Human Resources.
- Coordinate health and safety equipment and resources.
- Lead or support special projects related to health, safety, and wellness.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Education and experience you will need to have:
- College diploma or university degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Human Resources, Disability Management, or a related field.
- Joint Health and Safety Committee Certification.
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in an occupational health and safety role, including developing written programs, conducting audits, delivering training, and maintaining accurate records.
- Strong working knowledge of Ontario health and safety legislation, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act and applicable regulations.
- Proven ability to assess risk, conduct investigations, and implement corrective and preventative actions.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills with attention to detail.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with employees at all levels of the organization.
- Experience delivering training and presenting to small and large groups.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Valid driver’s licence and ability to travel to various work locations as required.
And even better if…
- You hold a Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) or Canadian Registered Safety Technician (CRST) designation.
- You have experience with WSIB claims management and the WSIB Health and Safety Excellence Program.
- You have worked in a municipal, conservation authority, or public-sector environment.
- You bring 5 plus years of progressive experience managing health and safety programs.
- You have experience supporting HR functions or employee wellness initiatives.
- You have working knowledge of the Employment Standards Act and Human Rights Code.

Working Conditions
The position is based at the Hamilton Conservation Authority main office (Woodend) located at 838 Mineral Spring Road, Ancaster. This is a full-time position working 37.5 hours per week (7.5 hours per day). Occasional evening and weekend work is required to support operations within our Conservation Areas. Regular travel throughout the watershed is part of this role, including visits to work sites.
Salary
The position offers a salary range of $65,854 to $76,342 commensurate with experience and education. Yearly cost-of-living adjustments (COLA) and merit increases may also be considered.

This position is eligible for benefits as outlined in HCA’s Employee Handbook as it pertains to a full-time position. Most benefits become effective after the 3-month probation period (health, dental, disability insurances and life insurance); however, the defined contribution pension plan requires one year of service.
