Conservation Area Maintenance Worker
at Hamilton Mountain Conservation Area
The Conservation Area Worker reports to the Area Superintendent, performing various grounds, equipment and facility maintenance duties across Hamilton Mountain Conservation Areas. The position also plays an important role in customer service and administration, providing information and services to visitors and provides a level of supervision to the conservation area during weekends, handling park issues as they arise.
The Hamilton Mountain Conservation Area (HMCA) encompasses approximately 419 hectares including Felker’s Falls, Devil’s Punchbowl, Mount Albion, Eramosa Karst, and Saltfleet, Hamilton Conservation Authority’s newest conservation area. Also included in this catchment area are the Dofasco Trail (9 km), Chippewa Trail (15 km) and HCA managed portions of the East Mountain Trail Loop. These areas play a major role in providing passive recreational opportunities and conserving our watersheds natural heritage features in the east end of the HCA watershed.
Responsibilities
- Perform various grounds maintenance duties including grass cutting and trimming, tree pruning, litter control, trail maintenance, inspections, housekeeping, washroom cleaning and general maintenance of the area.
- General customer service duties
- Maintenance of large-scale restoration projects
- Safely operate vehicles and equipment as required by law and HCA policy.
- Light construction duties such as assembling picnic tables or fences, maintaining bridges/boardwalks etc.
- Respond to public inquiries in the field regarding facility layout, activities and conservation area rules and regulations
- Comply with the HCA Personnel Policy, Safe Working Procedures and emergency procedures, reporting all accidents and unsafe situations
- Keep tools and equipment properly cleaned, serviced, stored and in safe working order
- Operate HCA vehicles, including tractors utility vehicles, mowers and equipment with utmost safety and caution as instructed and to adhere to all applicable Safe Working Procedures
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- Minimum education of Secondary School diploma
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, coworkers, and the public
- Be creative, flexible and capable of solving problems
- Demonstrate initiative, efficiency, and reliability towards all jobs assigned
- Knowledge of the HCA and the HCA owned and managed properties is a definite asset
- Previous maintenance equipment operation experiences preferred
- Experience operating tractors and front end loaders is an asset
- Must have a valid class G driver’s license
- Good computer skills
- Good manual dexterity and ability to work outdoors in all types of weather
- Able to lift up to 50 pounds
- Able to communicate effectively, including around noisy operations equipment
- Able to efficiently use, operate and maintain tools and diagnostic equipment
- Able to organize, clean and maintain a safe work area
Working Conditions
This position will be based out of the Hamilton Mountain Works Yard at 174 Ridge Rd, Stoney Creek. Work hours are 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, Sunday through Saturday. Scheduled work on weekends and holidays will be a recurring and expected aspect of the position. Additionally, the work location may change to any of HCA’s conservation or managed areas through the year depending on business needs to assist on either a short- or longer-term basis or at special events at the request of the Director of Conservation Area Services.
Work Term and Rate of Pay
This is a six (6) month contract position running from May 1, 2026, until October 31, 2026. The rate of pay is $20.62 per hour.
