Job Summary

The position assists with a wide range of restoration and construction projects within all HCA owned Conservation Areas, including infrastructure upgrades to: buildings, fences, roads, parking lots, trails, pedestrian bridges, and utility services. This position plays an important role within the Capital Projects & Strategic Services division and reports directly to the Construction

Foreman, while providing support for the Construction Projects Manager. This position requires demonstrated skills from previous in field experience.

Job Functions & Tasks

  • Work with other crew members performing general and skilled labourer duties, as required such as repairing and building bridges and boardwalks, laying sod, installing underground utility services.
  • Assist other trades (Carpentry/Electrical) when necessary to pull new wires through conduit, roof replacements, drywall and flooring tasks.
  • Load/Unload various pieces of equipment and materials on trailer and dump boxes.
  • Ensure all pieces are secured properly and meet MTO standards
  • Deliver materials to job sites.
  • Conduct daily vehicle circle checks on trucks and keep accurate documentation as per Ministry of Transportation standards in accordance to the Highway Traffic Act as well for the purpose to update HCA supervisors as to when equipment is due for service or repair.
  • Skid steers, trench compactors and other various light equipment.
  • Road & Trail Resurfacing/Compacting.
  • Conduct daily circle checks on equipment and keep accurate documentation for the purpose to update HCA supervisors as to when equipment is due for service or repair.
  • Carry out any other duties and tasks as assigned to support the team effort at HCA.

Qualifications & Experience Requirements

  • High School Diploma as a minimum (post-secondary a definite asset)
  • Applicants should possess 2+ years minimum experience in a construction/landscape setting as well as knowledge of common construction/landscape practices
  • Applicants must demonstrate good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be available to work on evenings, weekends and holidays as required during our busy season throughout the parks
  • Other certifications such as; Fall Arrest, First Aid, and Man-lift would be an asset.
  • Welding experience using ARC/stick for fabrication in the field is a definite asset.
  • Possess a valid Ontario class ‘G’ driver’s license in good clean standing order.
  • Experience operating small construction equipment such as rollers, trench compactors, tractors, and skid steers
  • Experience operating various types of power tools and equipment relating specifically to the construction trade and driving various types of HCA trucks, equipment and rental equipment.
  • Experience in minor plumbing and fitting of electrical conduits for utility service
  • Have the ability to lift 80 lbs. and walk for extended periods of time.
  • General carpentry and plumbing skills.
  • Must enjoy working outdoors in all weather conditions.

Work Location and Hours of Work

Position is located at the Millgrove Works Yard of the Hamilton Conservation Authority, located at 594 5th Concession West, Millgrove, Ont. Hours of work generally fall between 7am – 4:30 pm, with a half-hour unpaid lunch based on a 40-hour work week, Monday through Friday. Work outside of these hours may be required on occasion. Depending on approved projects, funding and scope of work in any given year this position may be considered for annual renewal as to support the team effort.

Income Level

This is a contract position with an hourly rate starting at $24.75 per hour or more based on experience. Progression through the pay range band where this position has been graded will be based on merit and is considered on an annual basis.

Enrolment in Medical and Dental Benefits is available after 3-month probation, as well as enrolment in the pension plan after one year of service.
