Job Opening: Monitoring Technologist

Hamilton Conservation Authority is hiring a Monitoring Technologist, a 2-Year Contract position

This is a 2-year contract position in the Hamilton Conservation Authority’s (HCA) Watershed Management Services Division. The Monitoring Technologist assists the Monitoring Technician with the implementation of the Hamilton Conservation Authority’s (HCA) water monitoring programs. This position will also assist with the overall Watershed Engineering program.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Hamilton Harbour Remedial Action Plan Surface Water Quality Monitoring

  • Assist in biweekly water quality grab sampling
  • Support HCA staff with event-based water quality ISCO auto-sampling
  • Assist in flow monitoring rating curve development
  • Undertake equipment maintenance duties
  • Assist in the installation of new flow monitoring gauge(s) and ISCO auto-sampler(s)
  • Responsible for data processing of water quality sampling results
  • Responsible for data analysis of water quality sampling results
  • Assist in drafting technical reports

Maintenance of Stream and Rain Gauge Data Acquisition Network

  • Assist in the maintenance and monitoring of Hamilton Conservation Authority precipitation and flow stations. Undertake tasks in data collection, and management
  • Complete flow and precipitation analysis as required
  • Assist with improvements and/ or repairs to precipitation and flow gauging

Data Management

  • Responsible for the continuing Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) of data within the WISKI database.
  • Responsible for WISKI database and associated tool development

Flood Forecasting and Warning Monitoring
Responsible for data collection, processing, and initial analysis of precipitation, snowmelt, and watercourse flow conditions, in support of HCA’s Flood Forecasting and Warning program

• Other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • A graduate of a university or college program specializing in resources management or related environmental sciences
  • Understanding of principles and approaches related to water quality sampling, flood forecasting, hydrology, fluvial geomorphology, natural resources management, and environmental impact assessment, and knowledge of watershed management and land use planning processes
  • Experience with surface water quality sampling, and the associated data management and analysis
  • Experience with flood forecasting, and the associated data management
  • Experience with hydrology-based database software, preferably WISKI-SODA.
  •  Experience with precipitation and streamflow gauges, and the associated data management and analysis
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Positive team player capable of self-directed, independent work
  • Ability to work outdoors to conduct field investigations in variable terrain and weather conditions
  • Possess a valid Ontario driver’s license
  • Proficient with the use of Microsoft Office software suite including database management (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access), and experience working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

WORKING CONDITIONS:
This contract position will be based at the HCA’s main office in Ancaster, Ontario. However, some time will be spent out of the office attending meetings and conducting site visits and inspections on properties throughout the watershed. Working hours will total
37.5 per week, Monday through Friday inclusive with the additional requirement of evening meetings and occasional work on weekends.

As per HCA’s Vaccination Verification and Testing policy, all HCA staff members must provide proof of full COVID-19 vaccination or undertake regular testing.

WORK TERM AND RATE OF PAY:
This is a 2-year contract position. The rate of pay level is $26.89 per hour. HCA offers a comprehensive benefits package including health, dental, and vision care, after the 3-month probation period and a defined contribution pension plan after 1 year of service.
