Historical Interpreter

(Museum Educator – School Programs) Westfield Heritage Conservation Area

Westfield is a stunning collection of over 30 historical buildings which has made Westfield one of the most interesting historical destinations in Ontario. Carefully restored and staffed with costumed interpreters, the buildings capture the true charm and spirit of early Canadian culture.

The Historical Interpreter (Museum Educator – School Programs) engages student groups visiting Westfield Heritage Village Conservation Area in interactive educational programs at Westfield. Working within the site’s historical buildings and natural areas, the interpreter leads activities and experiences that encourage students to consider aspects of daily life in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The Historical Interpreter reports to the Westfield Program Coordinator.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate domestic, agricultural and trade skills and crafts, lead tour groups and set up and maintain various teaching locations.
  • Lead students and group leaders in daily educational programs.
  • Engage with student groups and visitors to answer questions and provide additional information.
  • Participate in initial and ongoing training.
  • Prepare and maintain program materials.
  • Work in all seasons within historical buildings and landscapes using historical clothing, fixtures, equipment, and techniques.
  • Demonstrate care for artifacts and historical buildings.
  • Conduct secondary and accurate historical research for programs as required.
  • Collaborate with other staff and volunteers to plan and attend events and programs.
  • Comply with Conservation Authority personnel policy, safety, and emergency procedures.
  • Report all accidents and unsafe situations.
  • Occasionally required to conduct guided tours or assist in other programs of the museum.

Qualification

  • Experience related to education, history, or museum work and/or a degree, diploma, or accredited certification in these areas, is required.
  • Experience and comfort speaking in group settings are required.
  • An aptitude for engaging students in a program of educational experiences.
  • Knowledge of Canadian history.
  • Possess a high level of interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Show initiative, enthusiasm, and reliability.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to providing inclusive and accessible opportunities to diverse audiences.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Ability to perform physical tasks related to historical demonstrations.

Working Conditions

The work location will be at Westfield Heritage Village, 1049 Kirkwall Road, Rockton. This position is on an “as required” basis throughout the year and hours can range from 0-30 hours weekly, with the requirement of regular evenings and weekend shifts during the year as required.

The Historical Interpreter will normally perform their duties in reproduction historical clothing and approved footwear. The setting is an indoor and outdoor environment with a great deal of standing with exposure to seasonal temperatures, direct sunlight, insects, plants, wood smoke and open flames.

Training, teaching materials and period clothing will be provided.

Salary

This is a casual position with an hourly rate starting at $20.27 per hour based on experience.
