Red Coats and Black Powder

On Sunday, April 28 from 12:30 to 4:00 p.m., members of the recreated Upper Canada Militia and the 89th Regiment of Foot will be training at Westfield Heritage Village. You are invited to visit on this afternoon to get a taste of what it would have been like to be a soldier in the War of 1812.

When the Americans attacked Canada in 1812, all Canadian men between 16 and 60 had to be ready to take up arms to defend their country against the invaders. They reinforced the British Forces and successfully repelled multiple attacks for three years. On this special afternoon, the red coated soldiers from the recreated 89th Regiment from Britain will be helping to train the citizen soldiers to become an effective fighting force.

From 12:30 to 4 PM, you will be able to watch the group practice early 19th century battle drills, maneuvers, and tactics. You can get up close to inspect the uniforms and weapons, detailed reproductions of those worn and used by Canadian and British soldiers in the War of 1812.

Bring your camera to capture dramatic demonstrations of black powder musketry and maybe even grab a selfie with a soldier! Members of the re-enactment groups will be pleased to answer questions and discuss 1812 era battle tactics with you.

Many of Westfield’s more than thirty historic buildings will be staffed by the village’s authentically dressed volunteer interpreters. You won’t want to miss a visit to the train station, one room school house, blacksmith shop and much, much more. The Gift Shop will be open with a wide selection of maple products, toys and special gifts. Stop by the General Store for some unique sweet treats.

Admission is $12.00 for adults, $10.00 for seniors (65+) and $6.50 for Youths ages 6-17.  Children 5 and under are admitted free. Family Rate is $32.00 (two adults and two youth).  HCA Members receive free admission for two adults and up to four youths. Parking is free. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or online.
