Assistant Ecologist - Contract Position

This position is in Hamilton Conservation Authority’s (HCA) Watershed Planning and Engineering Department. Responsibilities include assistance with implementation of the Aquatic and Terrestrial Monitoring Programs including field data collection, data analysis, database management and report writing. This position reports to the HCA Aquatic and Terrestrial Ecologists.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Help plan and coordinate the 2020 field ecology program with assistance from the Terrestrial and Aquatic Ecologists
  • Support the Aquatic Ecologist, to conduct fisheries and benthic invertebrate assessments throughout the HCA watershed as it relates to the Aquatic Resource Monitoring Program
  • Support the Terrestrial Ecologist to conduct botanical, forest regeneration, breeding bird and frog call surveys throughout the HCA watershed as it relates to the Terrestrial Resource Monitoring Program and Conservation Areas Master Plan schedule
  • Act as an assistant to the Terrestrial Ecologist for invasive species removal including pesticide application
  • Assist in ecological rehabilitation projects
  • Assist with benthic invertebrate field collection and lab identification
  • Help with the maintenance of GIS data layers
  • Enter data related to the ecology field program and maintain HCA’s ecological databases
  • Maintain field equipment
  • Other duties as assigned


  • Graduated from University or College with a degree focused in Biology, Ecology, and/or Environmental Science-related studies
  • Good flora and fauna identification skills
  • Good fish and benthic invertebrate identification experience
  • Electrofishing certification is an asset
  • OBBN certification is an asset
  • Working experience with field inventory protocols, particularly Ecological Land Classification and/or Ecological Monitoring and Assessment Network Protocols, is an asset
  • Able to work as a team member and with adult volunteers
  • A working knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Valid Ontario driver’s license and current first aid/CPR certification
  • Transportation to HCA office
  • Knowledge of local/watershed environmental conditions is an asset
  • Ability to work in inclement conditions (bugs, heat, rain), and field work experience is an asset 

Working Conditions

The Assistant Ecologist will be based at the Hamilton Conservation Authority’s main office, 838 Mineral Springs Road, Ancaster, Ontario; however, significant time will be spent in the field on HCA-owned lands and other properties.  Working hours will total 37.5 per week, Monday through Friday inclusive, with the additional requirement of evening meetings and occasional work on weekends.  Additionally, the work location may change to any of HCA’s conservation or managed areas through the year depending on business needs to assist on either a short or longer term basis or at special events

Work Term and Rate of Pay

This is a one-year contract position with an anticipated starting date of January, 6, 2020.  The rate of pay level is $19.00 per hour.
