The Christie Lake Conservation Area and other related properties are approximately 500 hectares in size. Christie Lake Conservation Area and Spencer Gorge attracts thousands of visitors to their picnic areas, sand beach, and natural areas and waterfalls for all season activities (swimming, hiking, fishing, cross country skiing, etc.). Christie Lake is home to the semi-annual Christie Lake Antique and Vintage show, single track mountain bike trails and 18- hole disc golf course with a strong program in place to increase third party events.

Responsibilities

The Conservation Area Worker is a general labourer within the conservation area. Reporting to the Area Superintendent, the position performs various grounds, equipment and facility maintenance duties, enable positive visitor experience through customer service, and is responsible for the upkeep of Conservation Area (CA) and facility appearance and providing information to the public and visitors. Other duties include:

  • Perform various grounds maintenance duties including grass cutting and trimming, garden care, litter control, routine maintenance, trail maintenance, housekeeping, washroom cleaning, and general maintenance of the area.
  • General customer service duties including gatehouse operations, store operations, pass sales and use of the CAMIS system.
  • Light construction duties such as assembling picnic tables or fences, maintaining bridges/boardwalks etc.
  • Respond to public inquiries in the field regarding facility layout, activities and conservation area rules and regulations
  • Comply with the HCA Personnel Policy, Safe Working Procedures and emergency procedures, reporting all accidents and unsafe situations
  • Keep tools and equipment properly cleaned, serviced, stored and in safe working order
  • Operate HCA vehicles, utility vehicles, tractors, mowers with utmost safety and caution as required by law, adhering to all applicable Safe Working Procedures
  • Other duties as assigned to assist the team effort at Hamilton Conservation Authority in any of our areas including but not limited to:
    • Fifty Point – Boat Lift – spring, fall, dock maintenance work
    • Millgrove winter works program or support thereof
    • HCA Woodend main office snow removal
    • Long Weekend support – various Conservation Areas as required
    • Westfield Heritage Village – Maple Syrup, Halloween, Christmas

Qualifications

  • Minimum education of Secondary School diploma with preference for post-secondary education in a related or accepted field of study
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with management, coworkers, and the general public
  • Ability to be creative, flexible and capable of solving problems
  • Demonstrate initiative, efficiency, and reliability towards all jobs assigned
  • Ability to set a positive work ethic for casual staff
  • Knowledge of the HCA and the HCA owned and managed properties is a definite asset
  • Good Computer Skills
  • Previous maintenance equipment operation experiences preferred
  • Previous customer service experience preferred
  • Must have a valid class G driver’s license

Physical Demands of the job include:

  • Good manual dexterity and ability to work in all types of weather
  • Operating ride on mowers or hand-held equipment for extended periods of time
  • Able to lift up to 50 pounds
  • Able to communicate effectively, including around noisy operations equipment
  • Able to efficiently use, operate and maintain tools and diagnostic equipment
  • Able to organize, clean and maintain a safe work area

Working Conditions

This position is based out of Christie Lake CA, Hwy #5, Dundas, ON and includes the Spencer Gorge Conservation Area under its managed areas. You will be assigned to work at other HCA owned/managed areas for special events and assignments as directed by the Superintendent. Work hours are normally 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Sunday through Saturday with a half-hour unpaid lunch, 40 hours per week. Overtime and the expectation to work weekends, evenings, scheduled start/end shifts times, and holidays is required.

Salary

This is a 50-week contract position with an hourly rate starting at $19.83 per hour or more based on experience. Progression will be based on merit and is considered on an annual basis. Vacation Pay will be paid out on each pay as per the Employment Standards Act.
