Water Resources Technician - Summer Student Position

This is a summer position in HCA’s Watershed Planning and Engineering Department. Responsibilities include assistance in maintenance of stream and rain gauge data and equipment, groundwater monitoring and reporting, surface water quality monitoring and reporting and data management. This position reports to the HCA Water Resources Engineering.


  • Maintenance of Stream and Rain Gauge Data Acquisition Network
    • Assistance in maintenance and monitoring of Hamilton Conservation Authority (HCA) precipitation and flow stations, including Christie and Valens Dam water levels
    • Assistance in data collection, and management
    • Assistance in flow and precipitation analysis as required
  • Groundwater Monitoring
    • Assistance in maintenance and monitoring of HCA / Provincial Groundwater Monitoring Network
    • Assistance in data collection, and management
  • Surface Water Quality Monitoring
    • Assistance in maintenance of monitoring of the HCA / Provincial Surface Water Quality Monitoring Network
    • Assistance in data collection, and management
    • Assistance in surface water analysis as required
  • Data Management
    • Assistance in Quality Assurance and Quality Control (QA/QC) of existing surface water, groundwater and precipitation data.
    • Ongoing data entry and its QA/QC
  • Other duties as required


  • Education – University/College with focus on water resources, engineering
  • Experience in water resources and environmental engineering, particularly rain and flow monitoring, water quality sampling, data processing and analysis
  • Good communication skills
  • Some flexibility as to pattern of work hours
  • Knowledge of environmental and natural resources relative to local, watershed and provincial levels
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel
  • Valid driver’s license (G license minimum)

Working Conditions:
The Water Resources Technician (Summer Student Position) will be based at the Conservation Authority’s main office in Ancaster, Ontario; however, some time will be spent in the field on HCA-owned lands and other properties. Working hours will total 37.5 per week, Monday through Friday inclusive, with the additional requirement of evening meetings and occasional work on weekends.

Work Term and Rate of Pay:
This is a 4-month casual student position with an anticipated starting date of Monday, May 2, 2016 and an anticipated completion date of Friday August 26, 2016. The rate of pay level is $13.50 per hour, and is dependent on experience.
