Job Opening: Conservation Area Technicians (2)

Conservation Area Technician – 2 Positions
(Work location will currently be at Christie Lake Conservation Area or Dundas Valley Conservation Area)

 Job Summary:
The Conservation Area Technician is responsible for maintaining and enhancing the facilities and grounds in a manner that allows for increases in the number of visitors to the Conservation Area.  The position also plays an important role in customer service and administration, providing information and services to visitors and provides a level of supervision to the conservation area during evenings and weekends, handling all park issues as they arise in the absence of the Superintendent and Assistant Superintendent.  The position also assists Fifty Point two times a year to help with launching and docking of boats and is assigned to the Millgrove Worksyard for designated periods in the winter.

Christie Lake Conservation Area attracts thousands of visitors to their picnic areas, sand beach and natural areas and waterfalls (including Spencer Gorge) for all season activities (swimming, hiking, fishing, cross country skiing etc.). Christie Lake is home to the semi-annual Christie Antique and Vintage Show, single track mountain bike trail and 18 hole disc golf course with a strong program in place to increase third party events.  The area also operates a dam.

The Dundas Valley Conservation Area is approximately 3000 acres.  The Conservation Area provides passive recreational activities for residents and visitors including a major multi-use trail system (hiking, horseback riding, biking, cross country skiing) while conserving the natural landscape, flora and fauna.  Additional properties on the Hamilton Mountain are serviced through the Dundas Valley including Tiffany & Felker Falls, Eramosa Karst, Devil’s Punchbowl and additional trails/properties on the east mountain. The Dundas Valley has been designated as an Environmentally Significant Area and contains many species of Provincial, Regional, and local significance.   Maintaining and promoting relations with the public at large and continuing to build relations with the Haudenosaunee with respect to their treaty rights and harvest activities that take place within the DVCA is a priority.

Job Duties:

  1. Maintaining & repairing conservation area facilities and grounds and reporting safety concerns including:
    • Grass cutting & trail maintenance and direct casual maintenance staff on the day to day park maintenance and provide supervision as needed on tasks.
  1. Carry out various security duties at the park and making sure park patrons abide by HCA Rules and Regulations as directed by the Conservation Area Superintendent including:
    • Assess and handle any issues that arise in the evenings which may involve dealing with potentially impaired and upset customers, defuse and calm any problem, potentially evicting problem visitors
    • Work with other enforcement agencies as needed such as Hamilton Police Service, Ontario provincial police, Ministry of Natural Resources etc.
  1. Assist with store operations and gatehouse responsibilities in the absence of the Conservation Area Superintendent/Assistant Superintendent including:
    • Assist in booking and reserving of pavilions for customers on the phone or in person as needed
    • Develop working knowledge and operator ability in gatehouse duties with cash register operations
  1. Christie Lake only - Water Testing and drinking water maintenance as directed by the Conservation Area Superintendent including:\
    • Test and record results for drinking water to ensure that it is safe for consumers
    • Assist with the operation and maintenance of small drinking water system and obtain small drinking water systems certificate every 36 months as per WCWC
  1. Assist with training the casual staff in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act, HCA policies and Safe Working Procedures including:
    • Complete training and keep up to date on all policies
    • Work along and guide staff on policies, including recommending retraining and other support measures and progressive discipline in circumstances when policies are not followed
  1. Operate a variety of grounds maintenance equipment including farm tractors, loaders, mowers, chainsaws, trucks and other equipment and record keeping for that equipment
  2. Dundas Valley - Assist in the development, set-up and hosting of special events in the park (weekend availability is required)

Other duties as assigned to assist the team effort at HCA at Christie Lake or in any of our areas.

Qualifications:

  • Post secondary education is required in the form of college diploma/certificate or university graduate
  • Valid driver’s license (G license minimum)
  • Sufficient experience is required to show a mechanical aptitude to operate various pieces of equipment
  • An ability and willingness to obtain certification in first aid/CPR, small drinking water systems, security, JH&SC certification, chainsaw certification and other credentials as required and possession of any of these qualifications is a definite asset
  • Must enjoy working outdoors in all types of weather, engage in sustained periods of walking and be able to lift up to 60 pounds
  • An ability to lead seasonal workers
  • Working knowledge of safe working practices
  • Good communication skills and a proven history of good record-keeping skills.
  • Be creative, flexible and capable of solving problems on a regular basis relating to equipment, staffing, special events etc.
  • Computer skills including a good working knowledge of the park booking system, and Microsoft Office (MS Word, Excel and Outlook)

 Work Location and Hours of Work:
Currently, there is an opening for a conservation area technician at Christie Lake and also for a conservation area technician at Dundas Valley. Additionally, the work location may change to any of HCA’s conservation or managed areas through the year depending on business needs to assist on either a short or longer term basis or at special events.  Work hours are 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week, Monday through Sunday.  Regular evening shifts as well as scheduled work on weekends and holidays during the busy summer season will be a recurring and expected aspect of the position.

Income Level & Benefits:
This is a full-time, full year position (52 weeks per year, however a seasonal layoff of up to 14 weeks is possible in any given year) with a 2016 salary scale of H3 which starts at $21.42 per hour. HCA offers a comprehensive benefits package as outlined in the Conservation Authority’s Personnel Policy, including a Defined Contribution pension plan, group RRSP and other savings vehicles.
