Stewardship Action Plans for Spring, Sulphur and Lower Spencer Creeks

These subwatersheds are shaped by the Niagara Escarpment and its associated Dundas Valley and include the Cootes Paradise Marsh. As a result, these subwatersheds pose unique environmental challenges, as residential, commercial and industrial properties lie within these significant natural areas. For this reason, these subwatersheds were identified as being of high priority for stewardship action.

Our daily activities can have harmful effects on these ecosystems. Some of these effects are already evident in the subwatersheds of Spring, Sulphur and Lower Spencer Creeks, but if everyone works together then we can help to heal our environment for today and future generations.

The Action Plans identify environmental stresses affecting these ecosystems and will include Stewardship Actions to prevent these harmful impacts and to restore areas that have already been affected.

In 2009, the Hamilton Conservation Authority, in cooperation with local agencies, businesses and residents, developed environmental Action Plans for these subwatersheds of Spencer Creek.

The Action Plans identified numerous environmental stresses in these areas including occurrences like: contaminated runoff from roadways, encroaching landscaping into our natural areas, habitat fragmentation, on-line ponds, litter, etc. Stewardship Actions relating to education outreach, scientific studies and habitat restoration were developed to help alleviate these problems.
